In 2018, The Police Superintendents’ Association launched a Coaching and Mentoring Programme, in collaboration with the College of Policing.
 
The  programme provides training in becoming a coach or mentor, enabling officers and staff across the policing family, access to informal, flexible support to help their professional development.
 
More than 700 mid-senior level police leaders are now trained and available to provide one-to-one support in a way that has not been available before.



What is coaching and mentoring?


Coaching – support and guidance to maximise self-learning and development needs

Mentoring – sharing expert knowledge of a role or subject area to help others

Accessing a coach or mentor gives you personal advice, guidance and expert knowledge in areas you identify as being key to your own professional development.

What's the benefit?


For beneficiaries:
The programme is endorsed by the College of Policing, it is flexible and informal, meaning that you contact a coach / mentor independently and arrange how you would like the support to be delivered.
 
Once you have linked with your coach / mentor, you decide whether you will speak face to face, over the phone, via email, and what topics you would like to cover.
 
This means that the support you receive is entirely based around your needs for your own personal or career goals.

It can help you with:

  • Promotion
  • Gaining skills or experience
  • Increasing your confidence at work

For coaches / mentors:
Those already providing coaching and mentoring tell us that they have benefitted hugely from the experience.
 
 Whilst providing an invaluable service to colleagues, it also provides useful experience and development in supervisory and leadership skills that are beneficial in other areas of work.
 
 Coaches / mentors are asked to actively seek out colleagues from under-represented groups to offer proactive support.
